Washington, DC - Congressman Ron Paul, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy (DIMP), and a nationally recognized expert on monetary policy, issued the following statement regarding the Federal Reserve’s decision to again lower interest rates:

“ America ’s economic difficulties, especially the problems in the housing market, are the direct result of the Federal Reserve’s inflationary policies. In the past year, we have seen MZM grow by 12%, yet the Fed continues to inflate the money supply. While prices for gold, oil, and staple commodities continue to rise, the purchasing power of the dollar for all Americans continues to fall. Inflationary monetary policies created the problems in the economy we are seeing, and these problems will be made worse, not better, by more inflation. Today’s action by the Fed is very bad news for American workers and retirees who are about to get hit with yet another jump in prices.

Make no mistake, the problems faced by the American people are not caused by unscrupulous mortgage brokers or the rising price of oil. These are symptoms of an economic disease caused by a spendthrift Congress enabled by loose monetary policy. Too many pundits praise the weak dollar as benefiting exporters, but they fail to see the harm done to thrifty, hard-working Americans. Rather than continuing to pursue a policy of easy credit and increasing debt, we need to return to a sound monetary system.”

This is just like Carlos Mencia says. When he starts talking about Michael Jackson being a freak. Swap Microsoft with Michael Jackson and freak with crappy software. Imagine this dialog:

Microsoft Vista, can you believe it can’t copy files? Microsoft has never hidden the fact that they make shitty software. It’s not like they made good software and one day they released crap. That’s not what happened. They’ve made crappy software since the beginning. People say, “can you believe they made an OS that can’t copy files.” Can you believe anything that PILE OF SHIT FUCKS UP, LOOK AT IT! They never get it right. They don’t even get it close.

The problem isn’t Microsoft. Microsoft fits the profile of the crappiest software company on the planet. Are they? I don’t know, I don’t use that crap. Do they fit the profile? Fuck yes! The problem is consumers that BUY THAT SHIT and continue to transfer wealth to that POOR EXCUSE for a company.

NO KIDDING! Really? But what REALLY pisses me off is that the government intends to bail people out! I was SMART and I did NOT buy. I did not sign up for an irresponsible loan. And the people that did irresponsibly borrow are going to get government handouts! How stupid. So then my TAX DOLLARS pay for the stupid people. We’ve created a turd and we need to take our lumps! Reducing overnight funds to 1% has a price. If that means banks go under, then so be it. If 2 million home owners foreclose, then so be it! That’s only 2%. We can’t live off 6 figure home increases every year. Housing is not an INDUSTRY.

First off, the Google browser sync tool for firefox is awesome. No more tracking down bookmarks on multiple machines. It *DID* however scramble a set of my bookmarks. I think the solution is to delete your profile from the machine that scrambles your bookmarks and start over. The instance of firefox that I had that was scrambling my bookmarks had been upgraded from Firefox pre 1.0. I think there was something stale in the profile.

A little more detail: . I joined two new machines to the Google browser sync. Everything was good. I imported my Safari bookmarks into one of the machines. The bookmarks propagated and all was VERY VERY GOOD! Then I joined one of my older machines that I had upgraded since probably Firefox 0.7. I was trying to integrate those bookmarks. That completely trashed my bookmarks. So I restored them from a backup and reoganized them. Then, once I connected that upgraded machine, the bookmarks were trashed once again. Since the only thing different about that machine was that it was older, I deleted the profile on the upgraded machine, restored the bookmarks again, and ALL was good.

Something handy to note is that inside your profile firefox keeps a backup of your bookmarks and keeps a few days of archives of your bookmarks. So all is not lost for sure.

Normally I don’t just rant about technology but sometimes I want to document things so I can go back later to see if anything is any better than it was. The other thing is these items are just plain broken and people just tolerate it even though there are better options on the market.

Three broken items in linux:

Process priorities to not translate to I/O priorities

Load Average includes processes that are blocked waiting for I/O

SCSI I/O busy for “too long” causes a kernel panic

So before I elaborate the better options on the market are: Solaris and OpenBSD.

Now to elaborate on the issues:

Process priorities and the associated I/O priority. In most multitasking operating systems you can set process priority. So imagine my web server should be faster but my backups should be slower. And normally this works. But in linux it’s ALL JACKED UP. So let’s say the web server has a high priority and the backup process has a low priority. All is good, until the backup process starts actually … you know … backing up files. What happens is it asks the system to open a file and starts reading the contents so that can copy the file to the backup. This triggers a system call that is NOT prioritized lower as it should be to start reading large chucks of a file. This degrades the system’s performance, even tho the process has a low priority. And the web server reacts slower. Which is completely unacceptable.

Load Average in LinSux wrong. Load average on every other system is an indication of how busy the CPU is. So in more detail, there are concepts here. There are processes that are basically process that are running and processes that are sleeping. Running processes are churning through stuff. Like maybe some complicated and lengthy mathematical computation. Sleeping processes are waiting for things to happen, maybe waiting for a web browser to request a page. Most systems have hundreds of sleeping processes and very few running processes. Load Average is the average number of processes that are running at any given time. So maybe it’s .63. Which means 63% of the time one process is running. Or maybe it’s 2.26. Which means there are 2.26 processes on average on the run queue. Now in LinSux processes that are WAITING for the DISK are counted in the number. This is HIGHLY misleading because they aren’t bogging down the CPU at all. A load of 10 can still yield a very usable system. On Solaris or BSD the system would be VERY busy and you should DEFINITELY add CPU. But in linux you can’t tell what’s going on from just that data. You have to probe much further. I love the standard linux bigot reaction, “It’s just linux it can deal with higher load than other systems.” Okay JACKASS, get off your ego. That’s the dumbest assessment on the planet.

Busy SCSI channels cause panic. This is just plain dumb. Apparently if the machine is very busy like with say vmware server and the scsi channel gets too much traffic the linux kernel assumes there’s a problem with the scsi driver or scsi devices and it just decides to stop (panic). Rather than assume the system is being USED LIKE IT SHOULD BE! That’s just whack. I haven’t actually verified this behavior, but it’s supposedly a known issue with vmware. How can that be a KNOWN issue!!!

I think that about sums it up. The moral of the story is use OpenBSD or Solaris.
